17 Dec 2011 Ride: An Ozark Mountian High

The euphoria from yesterday's ride where I passed 10,000 miles still runs through my blood.  Carol suggested that the endorphins may still be lingering around.  Yes, indeed.  It has been a wonderful natural high which only took 351 days to achieve.  It was well worth it.

A reminder that piggy-backing on this year-long journey is the effort to raise money for Community Meals where I volunteer cook every Wednesday.  Seeing donations come in would make achieving the 10,000 mile mark that much sweeter.  Those can be sent to:

Only time for a short ride on this beautiful day which saw the temperatures rise into the 50s.  A weight definitely felt as if it had been lifted when I rode now that the 10,000 mile mark has been met.  I wasn't looking to take photographs today and thought it might be a picture-less posting.  But, I came across a gentleman walking on the trail by Butterfield and I had to stop.

Forrest Goddard

It turned out that Forrest served in the Pacific during World War II and saw battle in New Guinea.  We talked a few minutes and his son belongs to a biking club.  I asked Forrest if he would be willing to meet with me sometime and talk about his WWII experiences and he said, yes.  We plan to get together after the first of the year and I am very much looking forward to our meeting.

That was about the half-way point of the ride today.  Knowing that it was going to be a short one, I was motivated to pump a bit harder.  I was still running high from yesterday and meeting Forrest gave me a bit of enthusiasm as well.  A half-mile from the end of my ride, a familiar face approached.

It was good running into John, who I rode with last Saturday.  He was finishing up a 50 + mile and he gave me some good-natured ribbing for only putting in 13 miles today; I figured I could rest on my laurels for one day.

Today's Ride:  65mins.  13.03 miles.   51°  Miles YTD:  10,014.31
